Try not to scratch your scalp. When treating dandruff at home the name of the game is reducing scalp irritation. When it comes to dandruff, not just any shampoo will do. Unfortunately, they can also be drying to hair. To reduce stress on your hair when using dandruff shampoo treatments, consider using these products on your scalp only. Let the shampoo remain on your scalp for at least five minutes. Use your regular shampoo on the rest of your hair. Be sure to use a good conditioner to restore moisture to your tresses after each dandruff treatment.

You should begin to notice a reduction in flakes and scalp irritation after about a week. If the dandruff problem persists or is accompanied by redness (which usually means the scalp is very inflamed) it is time to consult your doctor.
